Braving the Creepy Crawling Critters

Collecting Bug Samples

During the Kids College session, “What’s Buggin’ You?” at Paul D. Camp Community College, Neil Clark of the Southampton County office of Virginia Cooperative Extension identifies an insect for collection outside the Regional Workforce Development Center.

Participants, from left, are: Bradley Hammond of Newsoms, 10, Trey Turner of Franklin, 8, Hannah Sawyer of Ivor, 8, Wyatt Smith of Drewryville, 8, and Lane Cross of Zuni, 9, in back.

The students learned how to collect and classify bugs, the economic and ecological importance of them, and which ones should not be handled. In addition, they learned how to preserve a collection of insects by creating their own display.
