On Thursday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. Chowan University’s “Chowan Singers” (the head choral ensemble of the university), will present a concert at the Paul D. Camp Community College Regional Workforce Development Center, 100 North College Drive, Franklin. The concert will include selections from the Renaissance to present day. Selections also will include contemporary anthems and spirituals.

“We are so excited to have a choir of this caliber performing at Paul D. Camp Community College,” said Student Activities Coordinator MeChelle Blunt.

Chowan Singers have performed concerts throughout North Carolina, the Mid-Atlantic Region, Israel, the Palestinian Territories, Egypt, France and Italy. The group is under the direction of Dr. Gregory Parker, Professor of Music and Chair of the Department of Music at Chowan University. Parker holds degrees from Samford University, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.  In addition to his work as a choral conductor and church musician, he has performed extensively as a baritone soloist in operas, oratorios, and recitals.

Paula Pressnell, Artist in Residence at Chowan, is the accompanist for the groups. She is a cum laude graduate of Salem College, where she was a piano student of Clemens Sandresky.  In addition to her work at Chowan, Mrs. Pressnell maintains a private piano studio and is the organist at Murfreesboro Baptist Church.

A reception hosted by the Suffolk Chapter of the Links, Inc., will follow the concert. For more information about the concert, contact MeChelle Blunt, 757-569-6767 or mblunt@pdc.edu
