PTK Regional Convention 2012--Member Awards

ROANOKE— Phi Theta Kappa advisor Troy Hand and five members of the Omega Zeta Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK) at Paul D. Camp Community College recently attended the 33rd Annual Regional Convention in Roanoke. The majority of the colleges in the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) were represented at the conference.

The event was much more than just students with a GPA of over 3.5 coming together to have fun; it was about celebrating the positive impact they have made in the community and on their campuses. Public Relations Officer Karen Jenkins and President Zachary Gurganus were selected to be on the elections committee and had the opportunity to work the audience as they introduced the nominees for four regional officer positions. They later announced the winners.

During the formal Awards Gala, many honors were presented for the diligent work done by the numerous PTK chapters. Member Brenda Anyanwu mastered the Phi Theta Kappa’s signature hug. As a result, she hugged everyone at the conference, bringing home an award reflecting her PTK spirit. Recording Secretary Linda Muse-Ruvio and Jenkins were each recognized for their contributions and were inducted into the PTK Hall of Honors. PDCCC’s Phi Theta Kappa Chapter was also recognized for Outstanding Community Service for the Coat Drive that was held in December 2011 that provided more than 30 Suffolk citizens with warm coats for the winter.

To top off the evening, PDCCC’s Omega Zeta Chapter was chosen from all the PTK chapters throughout the entire VCCS to receive the Most Improved Chapter Award, which was gladly accepted by member James Williams; this was the Oscar moment that took us all by surprise. Jenkins, Muse-Ruvio, Anyanwu, and Gurganus were also inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Regional Alumni Chapter.

A lot of planning and new ideas to move the PDCCC’s Omega Zeta Chapter to the next level are beginning to be put into place. “We are fired up and ready to go forward,” said Jenkins.  “We need all PTK Omega Zeta members to participate and be active in our chapter. We want you; we need you.”
