Smithfield-Luter Scholarship Applications Accepted for Fall Semester

Paul D. Camp Community College is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the Smithfield-Luter Foundation Scholarship. The scholarship—a result of a partnership with Smithfield Foods—will provide funding to establish a full scholarship at PDCCC. This scholarship, available for fall, will provide $12,500 to fund a full two-year scholarship. PDCCC is honored to be the first Virginia Community College to receive such funding from the Foundation.

PDCCC President Dr. Paul Wm. Conco said, “Paul D. Camp Community College is proud to partner with Smithfield Foods for this scholarship program. We are grateful to be involved in a program that recognizes their employees’ service and dedication with a benefit that will impact a future generation of our community and the community’s workforce. It is truly a wonderful gift to the community.”

The Smithfield-Luter Foundation was created in 2002 by Joseph W. Luter, III, then president and chairman of Smithfield Foods, Inc., to provide educational scholarships to the dependent children and grandchildren of employees and retirees of the company and its family of companies who demonstrate financial need. Initially, the partnership was exclusive to Mr. Luter’s alma mater, Wake Forest. Today the Foundation has partnerships with Virginia Tech, Iowa State, Norfolk State, Virginia Union, Johnson and Wales, and Fayetteville universities. Paul D. Camp Community College joined this impressive list of partners in fall 2011.

Dennis H. Treacy, executive vice president and chief sustainability officer of Smithfield Foods, and executive director of the Smithfield-Luter Foundation, said, “We are pleased to partner with our local community college regarding the Smithfield-Luter Foundation Scholarship. By providing substantial financial assistance, it will enable the children and grandchildren of Smithfield Foods employees to further their education. We believe in the importance of higher education and how it empowers generations.”

The deadline to apply for the scholarship is July 23, 2012. For more information, log onto
