Head Coach & Athletic Director: David Mitchell
David Mitchell has accumulated over 200 High School Varsity Baseball wins since 2003 and has won 4 VISAA State Championships Div. II 2003, Div. III in 2004,2005,2008 and has one Div. III runner-up 2007. The VISAA has named Mitchell Coach of the Year in 2003, 2005, and 2008. He was named the Abe Goldblatt High School Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2009. Twenty-four of his graduates have continued baseball careers at the collegiate level including recent Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Alums, Taylor Edens (VMI), Anthony Waldner (Chowan), Greg Beale (RMC), Toby Buchanan (Louisburg/NSU), Sam Neal (Case Western) and Dominick Claxton (Ferrum). Numerous players during his coaching career have been named to the All Conference, All State and All Tidewater Teams. Mitchell has coached two VISAA State Players of the Year. Coach Mitchell additionally has served on the VISAA baseball board and is the Assistant Tournament Director.
In addition to coaching the Saints, David Mitchell has also served as an Assistant Coach for the Peninsula Pilots of the Coastal Plain League for the last seven years, which is an elite college baseball summer wood bat league. The Pilots’ roster is made up of players from colleges and universities such as D1 powers Clemson, UVA, Virginia Tech, Liberty, VCU, Richmond, Georgia Tech, Georgia, Western Kentucky, ODU, Georgetown, Villanova, Perdue, ECU, South Carolina, TCU, Maryland and more. Over 30 Major League Baseball draft picks have come through the Pilots’ organization in the past seven years Mitchell has been an assistant. The Pilots captured the 2013 and 2014 Coastal Plain League Championships. During the past 6 years the Pilots are 202-154. Notable top draft picks Mitchell has coached include First Round MLB Draft Pick Kes Carter (Tampa Bay Rays), Second Round MLB Draft Pick Will Lamb (Texas Rangers), First Round MLB Draft Pick Chad Pinder (Oakland Athletics), and Sixth Round MLB Draft Pick Jake Cave (New York Yankees). On June 28, 2014 the Pilots defeated Team USA CNT 7-5 in front of a sellout crowd of 3,400 at War Memorial Stadium. The first loss by Team USA to a CPL team since the series started in 2006.
During his playing days, David Mitchell was a four-year starter and three-time captain for Christopher Newport University. The 1998 Southeast Regional All-American holds the Career Stolen Base record for the Captains and remains in the Top 10 in Career at Bats, Career Hits, Career Doubles, and Career Batting Average. He earned Academic All-Dixie Conference in 1998 as well. In 1997 after his junior season David was invited to camp with the Ohio Valley Redcoats in Frontier League. In May of 1998 after his senior season David attended a pre-draft camp and workout in Pittsburgh at Three Rivers Stadium with former Pirates area scout Bobby McKinney.
Assistant Coach: Pat Stafford
Coach Stafford enters his 1st year as Assistant Baseball Coach at Paul D. Camp Community College working under Head Coach David Mitchell for the 3rd time in his career. Stafford was hired in June 2017 to the first ever coaching staff in school history. His responsibilities will include overseeing catchers, hitters, recruiting, and strength and conditioning.
Stafford comes to Paul D Camp CC after spending the past seven years coaching at the high school level and the past 5 coaching in the western tidewater area. Prior to coming to PDCCC, Stafford was the assistant varsity baseball coach at Nansemond Suffolk Academy in Suffolk, VA for two years. During the 2017 and 2016 season, Stafford helped lead the team to state tournament appearances in both years and numerous weeks in the Hampton Roads top 10.
From 2012-2015, Stafford was the Varsity Head Coach at King’s Fork High School in Suffolk, VA. Stafford took over the team in 2012 at the age of 22 being one of the youngest varsity coaches in the State of Virginia. The 2012-2013 season the Bulldogs went through a rebuilding phase after winning 2 games in 2012 and 3 games in 2013 respectively. The 2013 season had Outfielder Noah Johnson (Norfolk State University/ Palm Beach Atlantic University) Cedric Henry (College of the Albemarle) earned all-district honors.
The 2014 season Stafford lead the Bulldogs to the best season in school history to that point. The Bulldogs finished the season 15-9 breaking previous school record of 5 wins in a year. That year the Bulldogs won the King’s Fork Spring Break tournament championship and made their first ever playoff appearance. The bulldogs finished 2nd place in the conference regular season, 2nd place in the conference tournament, and finished the year with a regional semi-final appearance 1 game shy of the state tournament. That year the bulldogs had 6 players make the all-conference team and 2 players on the all-region team.
2015 season the Bulldogs followed up with yet another winning season finished the year 11-9. That year the Bulldogs finished in 2nd place in the conference regular season standings and had 2 players make the 1st team all-conference and 6 players make 2nd team all-conference. Two seniors had the opportunity to move on into the college ranks with Cal Bailey (UVA Wise) and Bryce Jones (UVA Wise, Virginia Wesleyan).
Stafford started his coaching career at his high school Alma Matter Alliance Christian School in Portsmouth, Va. He worked under current PDCCC head coach David Mitchell for the 2010 and 2011 season helping lead the team to two state tournament appearance.
Coach Stafford has also been a head coach and assistant coach in the Mid-Atlantic Pirates showcase organization from 2010-2015 and has coached over 60 players that have moved on into the college ranks included Jimmy Barnes who was drafted in the 11th round by the LA Angles in 2015.
During his playing days Stafford was a catcher at Potomac State College in Keyser, WV. Also was a part of the 2008 Virginia State Championship team and 2007 State Championship runner up team at Alliance Christian School playing for current PDCCC head coach David Mitchell.
Assistant Coach: Dylan Bratton
Bratton played varsity baseball at Alliance Christian HS under David Mitchell from 2007-2008 where he was a part of the VISAA Division 3 State Championship team in 2008. Played Varsity baseball at Churchland HS from 2009-20011 for Coach Billy Kline. During his senior season at Churchland he compiled an 11-0 record with a 1.10 ERA. He was selected First Team All-Eastern District, First Team Eastern Regional and Second Team All-State. Also named Eastern District Pitcher of the Year.
After HS, Bratton went on to play at Old Dominion University where he did not allow a run in his first 10.2 innings of work. He finished with a 3.75 ERA.
Shortly after college in Spring of 2017, Bratton coached at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy with Head Coach David Mitchell, and Assistant Coach Pat Stafford, working primarily with pitchers. The Saints finished ranked 6th in VISAA Divison II and were consistently ranked in the top 10 in Tidewater. NSA notched quality wins over Covenant, Atlantic Shores, Norfolk Christian, Hargrave and others.
He is now married to his wife Kayla and has two childen, Sandler and Piper.
