CSC Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)

Program Purpose:

This program is designed to prepare students for certification at the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Advance Emergency Medical Technician level.

Paul D. Camp Community College’s Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program provides students with the educational requirements needed to obtain National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certification and certify as an EMT through the Virginia Department of Health. Students who intent to work as an EMT outside of Virginia will need to receive NREMT certification and contact their state office of Emergency Medical Services. Students must comply with their state’s individual requirements in order to obtain authorization to practice in that particular state. It is each individual’s responsibility to understand, evaluate and comply with requirements for the state in which they intend to work as an EMT.  Please check your state’s reciprocity requirements through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NRMENT) https://www.nremt.org/

What will I learn?

Students successfully completing this program will be able to…

• Apply the basic concepts of development, pathophysiology and pharmacology to assessment and management of emergency patients.
• Administer medications, and communicate effectively with patients and other healthcare professionals.
• Establish and/or maintain a patent airway, oxygenate and ventilate a patient.
• Integrate the principles of assessment-based management to perform an appropriate physical assessment and implement the for patients with common medical and trauma conditions and for patients with advanced medical and trauma conditions.
• Administer medications and obtain vascular access.
• Obtain a proper history and perform a comprehensive physical exam on any patient, and communicate the findings to others.

How long will I need to be in college?

A college-ready student attending Camp full-time can complete this career studies certificate in one academic year (two semesters). 

What job or career can I get with this career studies certificate?

Upon completion of the program, graduates will possess the knowledge and skills required for a career as an EMT.

What is the job outlook for graduates from this program?

As of second quarter of 2023, total employment in the Hampton Roads Workforce Region for EMT was 921. There is projected annual demand/need for 66 new entrants into this occupation (Source:  Jobs EQ Occupation Report EMT and Paramedics, January 2024).
