A message from Dr. Lufkin,
There is no question that the past few months have presented challenges for almost every business, maybe none more so than the business of educating students. Professional educators have, by and large, done a tremendous job adapting to the hand we have all been dealt and worked diligently to achieve the best possible outcomes for their students. I am proud to say that our team here at Paul D. Camp Community College is no exception.
COVID-19 has certainly changed our business model, and I will outline a few of those changes in a moment. But on this point let me be clear: Camp Community College is, and will remain, open for business.
Our commitment to providing a quality post-secondary education has never been more important than it is today. Due to a couple of primary reasons, parents and students that previously did not consider community college an option in their planning process are now giving us serious consideration. First, there are questions as to whether many four-year institutions will allow students to live on campus in the fall and, for those that do, parents and students are concerned about the safety of doing so. Secondly, economic conditions have made the affordability of a community college education more appealing than ever, especially given the fact that many students planning to take classes at those four-year colleges may be doing so online and at home.
Our top priority has always been the safety and wellbeing of our faculty, staff and students. Since the beginning of this pandemic, our college has practiced an abundance of caution and social distancing in addition to following state and federal safety guidelines. We will continue to do so, and will only return to our previous teaching models once government and health officials deem it safe to do so. It is in that spirit that we will operate under the following conditions for our summer and fall semesters:
- Asynchronous and synchronous online courses, including dual enrollment courses, will remain online.
- Most currently scheduled face-to-face classes will become synchronous hybrid courses. If we must limit the number of students on campus for safety reasons, students would be assigned a day(s) each week to come to campus, participating in the course by Zoom on the other days the class meets. If we must convert classes to completely online later in the semester, students and faculty will be better prepared
- Classes that require face-to-face, hands-on experiences like welding, HVAC, clinicals, etc. will be offered in a hybrid setting with required social distancing practices observed. In short, our goal is to offer as much as we can in online and hybrid settings, and offer the hands-on courses in a responsible way that prioritizes the health and safety of our community.
It is our sincere hope that things return to normal as soon as possible, not just for the good of the college but for the benefit of our entire community. Until that time, Camp Community College remains poised to serve our students and the community by providing a high-quality college education at an affordable price.
