Camp Community College will launch a Sports Management Career Studies Certificate program starting with the 2023 Spring Semester. The program is the first of its kind in the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).

“We are excited to offer this new program to those who are interested in starting a career in sports management,” said Dr. Tara Atkins-Brady, Vice President, Academic and Student Development, at Camp. “Since we are the only college in the VCCS with this curriculum, we are hoping it will become a signature program for Camp.”

Behind the players and games, there are a variety of business functions that make it all happen. The Sports Management Career Studies Certificate explores the growing field of sports management focusing on sport management principles and practices. Students are exposed to business skills, oral and written communications, and critical thinking, gaining an understanding of the management of the sports industry and sports facilities. Career opportunities for individuals with knowledge and skills in sports management include athletic coach, athletic development specialist, athletic director, business development coordinator, event coordinator, and facilities manager.

Sports Management courses will be taught online by Dr. Joe Edenfield, Business and Accounting professor at the college. The 27-credit certificate includes courses in Sports Entertainment and Recreation Marketing, Introduction to Business, Communication in Management, Organizational Management, Introduction to Sports Management, Principles of Sports Management, Business Law I, Fiscal Planning and Management in Sport and Recreation, and Introduction to Digital and Information Literacy and Computer Applications.
