Camp set to launch NJCAA men’s and women’s basketball programs; teams will compete in Suffolk

Camp Community College has launched a National Junior College Athletic Association men’s basketball program with the hiring of head coach Franklin Chatman. The team will begin competition in the Fall of 2023 in Suffolk.

The college is also pursuing a head coach for a women’s basketball program.

Coach Chatman, who played college basketball at Virginia State University, has 20 years of coaching experience and player development and over 120 college victories at American National University, Stratford University, and Newport News Apprentice School. He has also coached at Nansemond River High School, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, and a 16-U Nike Elite Traveling Team. He has worked with over 20 athletes who have played a professional sport, including Dorian Finney-Smith, Mike Scott, and Kent Bazemore, all of whom played in the NBA.

While at Stratford, Chatman built the Cardinals into a nationally ranked program in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association, being ranked as high as #2 in the nation, while earning a berth in the USCAA National Tournament. He was the inaugural coach at ANU and was responsible for the overall operation of the program, including recruiting, academics, practice, games, equipment, scheduling and travel plans. 

Dr. Justin Oliver, who serves as athletic director for Camp, said Chatman is the right fit for the men’s start-up program.

“Coach Chatman has a lot of experience with smaller college programs and what it takes to make those programs successful, and he has experience with a start-up college program,” Dr. Oliver said. “He also knows many of the high school players in our region, so that should help with recruiting.”

Suffolk Public Schools has approved the use of its facilities for games and practices. The NJCAA has visited and approved SPS facilities for game use.

The addition of the two athletic programs will have an immediate impact on the college:

• Promoting the college in a positive light within Western Tidewater and help to drive enrollment, increase community spirit, and increase pride among the college’s students and alumni.
• Improving student completion and retention rates, which is a goal in the college’s current Strategic Plan. This would be achieved because all student-athletes must be full-time students, are dedicated to such a program, and tend to have higher completion/retention rates.
• Student-athletes will be able to participate in sports while maintaining the rigor of college academics through tutoring in core curriculum courses, and/or training in workforce skills. Also, students hindered by geography and/or lack of transportation have the opportunity to hone their athletic skills locally at Camp Community College.
