Truck  Driver Training (Commercial Driver’s License – CDL)

Camp's professional truck driving program sounds like a great opportunity for anyone looking to enter the trucking industry. The Truck Driver Training program includes 160 hours of training covering classroom instruction, backing maneuvers, equipment and safety checks, and on-the-road training. This ensures graduates are well-prepared with essential skills.


CDL Class A

Earning your Class A CDL can be the entryway to an entirely new career with higher pay and better benefits! With a CDL Class A, you can drive any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more if the vehicle(s) being towed has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 10,000 pounds. Vehicles in this class include Tractor-trailer, Truck and trailer combinations, and Tractor-trailer buses. If you hold a class A license and you have the correct endorsements, you may also operate vehicles listed in Class B.

Associated Credential: Class A Commercial Driver’s License (160 hours) [40 classroom hours and 120 hands-on hours]

CDL Class B

Start a new and exciting career by earning your Class B CDL and earn higher pay and better benefits! With a CDL Class B, you can drive any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more. Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more towing another vehicle with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less. This class includes straight trucks, large buses, segmented buses, trucks towing vehicles with GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less.

Register for CDL A or B classes here:

  1. Complete your Workforce PROFILE online. Please include your complete social security number.  After you have completed your profile, please log out.
  2. Complete the Truck Driving FastForward Form
  3. Complete the DOMICILE DETERMINATION form.
    Workforce will automatically receive the form once you successfully complete it.
  4. Complete the FANTIC APPLICATION form.
    Workforce will automatically receive the form once you successfully complete it.
  5. Complete the Student DMV Release form. This is an online fillable form. 
    Workforce will automatically receive the form once you successfully complete it.
  6. Complete the SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION form.  This is an online fillable form. 
    Workforce will automatically receive the form once you successfully complete it.

  • Valid identification card (Preferably a Virginia's driver license or other picture identification)
  • Proof of unemployment insurance (if applicable)
  • SNAP or TANF card if applicable
  • Recent Tax Return OR W‐2 OR Last 3 Pay Stubs.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males ONLY. Your registration can be downloaded at: https://www.sss.gov/

Prospective students will be officially enrolled in the CDL Class A or CDL Class B course when all registration documents have been completed and submitted, and payment for the course has been received.

Students may have the D.O.T. physical and drug screen completed at a NowCare location, or request that Shippers Choice (757-375-7053) schedule the tests for the first week of class.

Students who do not successfully complete the course by earning a grade of “S” for satisfactory within 30 days of the course end date, have agreed per the signed FastForward funding Agreement, to pay 1/3 of the total tuition to Paul D. Camp Community College. 

The DMV final testing can now be conducted by Shipper’s Choice following the completion of the class at the class location.  Students will pay Shipper’s Choice $50 to take the test.

Upon satisfactory completion, a certificate from Paul D. Camp Community College will be issued. The school has approximately 60 local and long distance carriers in need of graduates.

Registration Deadline for Non-credit Classes: All registration documents must be submitted by 4:00PM one (1) week prior to class start date.  Payments must be submitted by 4:00PM three (3) business days prior to class start date.

As of the fourth quarter of 2021, total employment in the Hampton Roads Workforce Region for Heavy & Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers was 5,701.

There is projected annual demand for 642 new entrants into this occupation.
